My B-tech year 2015
Halooo..
My name is Rona-Celia Meyer and I am doing my B-tech in Interior Design at NMMU. The year is about discovering yourself, or that is how it feels to me. Designing something you like and doing it for a year can be challenging, but if it is something you love - it will always be worth it!
I am designing an Alzheimer's home, because I am a family orientated person and love to help people. Everything about people draws me in.. I hope to design a space where Alzheimer patients can be free to explore new things and create the optimal living environment...
Here is my process throughout the year...

Matching colours...
On Friday Lene brought the BIG Plascon colour chart to class. We got the chance to match our chosen colour scheme for our space with the appropriate colours of Plascon. It was so much fun!

Conceptual Sketches...
Hand sketches are probably the best way to go and to develop your skills more... We had to hand in 5 conceptual spaces for our design today... We presented them to the class and it was actually a lot of fun! The feedback was satisfying, i need to incorporate my theory in more depth in my spaces... This is actually exciting because it pushes you to think out of the box and create your own designs...
A good thing about hand sketches is that it helps you to draw quicker and easier on the computer, because your ideas are also more finalised...
Our next five spaces are due for next Tuesday and then we will probably have an overall feel for our space...;)

GradUaTiOn
We had graduation this weekend and actually it was an overwhelming experience... Getting dresses, taking photos, being at the right place at the right time, taking some more photos... hahaha... Everyone was just so happy and excited for us, I could not stop smiling! We took soooo many photos, and nice ones! Seeing the third year friends was also very exciting-Andrea and Courtenay!
Hier is so paar kiekies van die lekker dag! Abdullah who is in our class for B-Tech took most of the photo's, we are still waiting for the rest - he is just editing;)
My gesin - I am the only child... So dit is net ons 3kies;)
A class i will never forget... memories that turned my student years upside down( i actually never want n turned around again)...
Squashhh.. just get in there!!!
Walking away, but hopefully never saying good-bye...
Striking a pose with Lene!

Name Change...
As I mentioned previously my intended name was "Our Home"... I sat down for a crit with Lene (our design lecturer) and she felt that our home is to "strict" - if I can say it like that. I always wanted to have a more quirky name, some word play on the word Alzheimer's but I was scared it will be insensitive towards the patients and maybe even family or friends. Lene told me to go with my initial gut feeling and look at more playful names. My favourite one is "All Timers" which is my chosen name for my building now. "All Timers" is wordplay on Alzheimer's and Old Timers which means the elderly people. All Timers fits better with the theories I am using and with the overall feel I want for my space. The word makes me excited for my space now! The name and everything I aspire to do is now just blending better...
This is now my final logo... The round symbols suggests an abstract brain eventually fading out, which is what happens with Alzheimer patients - their memory fades away....

Friends come visit...
Janine het kom kuier. She also studied Interior Design at NNMU... was so lekker om jou te sien na soos n jaar en n half!...
The Thesis...
For our B-Tech year we are writing at thesis on your design. We have to research theories that will back your design ideas... The theories for my project is naturally Alzheimer's, Contemporary Art Therapy like art, drama, music and literature... My final theory is where the abstract part simmers through... which is multi sensory stimulation - awakening all 5 senses which is taste, smell, sight, touch and hearing... this is where the Snoezelen rooms comes to play - a room that stimulates all five senses... too coollll;)
These are examples of Snoezelen Rooms = i want one...
Snoezelen Rooms can have different themes, that allows for different types of stimulation through textures, materials etc.
Research have shown that Snoezelen Rooms can enhance the quality of life for Alzheimer patients, encourage more communication and gives a feeling of relaxation and satisfaction...

Logo and name...
Coming up with an appropriate name for an Alzheimer's home was a brain teaser!sjoee... Because it is a sensitive subject you need to choose your words carefully... I eventually chose "Our Home" as my name because it gives a sense of belonging and community...
Some conceptual sketches showing the process of the logo development... fun!

My first space planning crit...
Space planning for a medical facility is very tricky, because spesific guidelines need to be followed.. which is good to work with because you basically have a checklist of what must be in your space. The thing is I also love abstract design, and the question was how to implement this into my space as well... Luckily i stumbled upon an interesting theory which is a Snoezelen Room... ill explain later...
Sooooo... the pencil marks, yeah that's whats happening...:)

And so the model building begins....
My building is located in St. Francis Bay in the Eastern Cape. The building is built according to the building regulations of St. Francis Bay which is white walls with black roofs and many more guidelines. The building gives a homey feel which is the environment I strive for in my space.
